Latin Church of Birzeit Hall
Under the auspices of Birzeit churches, a panel was held in the Latin Church Hall titled “Patriarch Sophronius and Caliph Omar’s Covenant” in which H. E. Sheikh ‘Isam Rumman and Dr. Geries S. Khoury took part. The panel was moderated by Fr. Dr. Louis Hazboun who welcomed all those attending the event and underlined the importance of holding these events.
Sheikh Abu Rumman focused on the importance of Omar’s Covenant. It is an important historical document indicating clearly the tolerance of Islam and the just Caliph Omar.
Dr. Geries S. Khoury focused in his book on Patriarch Sophronius and Omar’s Covenant. He gave a new reading to the Covenant indicating the various phases of it. Omar’s Covenant is highly distinguished compared with what is happening today where the takfiri elements are becoming paramount.
The panel was concluded with a question and an answer as well as further discussion session.
