{"id":2225,"date":"2022-05-04T13:59:39","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T13:59:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/al-liqacenter.org.ps\/?p=2225"},"modified":"2022-05-04T13:59:39","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T13:59:39","slug":"public-lecture-at-the-swedish-christian-study-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/al-liqacenter.org.ps\/?p=2225","title":{"rendered":"Public lecture at the Swedish Christian Study Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Patriarch Sophronius and the \u2018Omarite Covenant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Events in Jerusalem A.D. 638, when Patriarch Sophronius met Caliph \u2018Omar.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Geries Khoury<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the invitation of the Swedish Christian Center in Jerusalem, Dr. Geries S. Khoury lectured on the life of Sophronius and the many challenges facing him before and after his election as Patriarch of Jerusalem focusing as well on Al-Liqa\u2019s 2015 publication titled \u201cSophronius: Book of Evidence on Confirming Faith\u201d by Dr. Geries S. Khoury. The author\u2019s study and critical edition of Sophronius\u2019 life, works and Omar\u2019s Covenant was a major focus of Dr. Geries\u2019 lecture. Sophronius and Jerusalem were besieged by Muslim forces. This led the Patriarch to call for reconciliation on the condition that Caliph Omar himself should come to Jerusalem to speak with him. As a result Omar\u2019s Covenant was drawn up. Clearly Omar\u2019s actions reflected a man of honor with a strong faith. The Covenant guaranteed the rights and freedoms of all Christians. Dr. Geries reiterated the importance of the Covenant in laying the foundation of Christian Muslim encounters and dialogs throughout history.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Geries pointed out that there were some caliphs and governors who did not respect Omar\u2019s Covenant or Christians\u2019 holy places. Some even aggressed against Muslims. At the end of the lecture, a question and an answer session took place.
